This week in blocks ,we added the challenge of working with a partner. Each pair was divided into a master builder and a gopher. The master builder is in charge of the plan while the gopher supports the builder by fetching blocks and placing them as asked.
This activity provides opportunities for children to speak with a purpose and be heard by their peers and teachers. It also requires the extra step of planning before starting work, something we ask for in other areas such as paint, drawing and clay. The children have switched roles throughout activity time giving everyone the chance to lead or support another.
As we pair children we look for partners who can challenge each other to grow in different ways.
We pair a quiet child with a kind friend who can draw them out and engage in discussion. We pair two strong wills together to work on negotiation and conflict resolution. We pair a strong builder with a creative designer.
As the children build structures they are building friendships and character.
