In worship we began telling the story of Creation, every day unveiling a little more of the universe. On the first day, God said, "Let there be light." And God separated the light from the darkness. In class we opened collage and paint for the children to respond to the worship story.
The Rivers Class children were so excited for paint to open. Many had been asking since the classroom visits about using the easel and paintbrushes in our classroom. The children learned the first lesson of paint, which is to dip the tip, getting just enough paint on the tip of the paintbrush for a strong line. Ms Buckley demonstrates this on the nest during activity introductions.
Each child created paintings of his or her own in response to the worship story. Two children work side-by-side on the easel. Sometimes a child will watch while waiting for their turn. Ms Buckley asks, "Would you like your paper portrait or landscape?"
Some children chose to fill the whole paper with light! We wonder what color we will use next in paint.
After painting, the children can wash their hands in a nearby bucket of soapy water. We use tempera paint so it should wash out if any gets on the children's clothes.
As we work in paint and collage, you won't find a lot new on the individual clipboards, But you will find a developing series of artwork that shows the story we have been hearing in worship on our classroom walls. That God made light. And God made sky and seas. Everyone has helped to make these. We hope you will stop in to enjoy our work.
