Can We Make Our Own Dough?

The Rivers class has made several inquiries into food preparation, including how to make flour, how to make flour delicious, and how to use flour with other ingredients in a recipe.  At the clay table, students have spent several weeks sculpting food, including rolling (with rolling pins), cutting (with knives) and pricking (with forks).  "Clay is like dough," was a common observation.

On Wednesday, they made our own dough.  Following a picture recipe, students...

measured flour,

added leavening and spices,

and a pinch of salt.

Deciding how much was a whole cup required some discussion.  Some ingredients look similar.  Comparing the letters in the recipe to the letters on the containers helped to know which white powder is which, and which brown spice is which.  It was noted that some spices taste quite good plain.

To get half a stick of butter, they decided that a knife would be needed.

They creamed the butter,
added brown sugar,

and stirred in the flour mixture.

Can we use our skills with rolling pins, knives and forks -- gained at the clay table -- and shape this dough into something that can be decorated, baked and... eaten?  We hope so!
