What an adventure we had on our walking trip today! Henry deemed it a “hike.”
Construction is taking place on the park sidewalks so we were unable to explore the large rock as we’d hoped, and unexpected rain fell during our snack time!
Despite these hiccups, the children enjoyed exploring the different playground equipment and creating their own activities--chasing dinosaurs or retelling the story of Three Billy Goats Gruff on the rope bridge.
At the rope bridge, each child determined if his or her legs were long enough to reach from step to step and created a strategy for crossing over.
The different equipment offered new challenges to our class. Teachers and chaperones were happy to lend a hand when needed for those taking a first attempt at the stepping stones or rope bridge. Once a child had experienced success we stepped back to allow, and celebrate, greater independence.
The children were fully engaged in their active play, balancing and clambering.
Preschool is a great time for everyone to start walking more and using the stroller less. As well as building stamina, walking develops coordination and big muscle movement. By the end of this morning, we were all exhausted from the walk and from our active play. I am sure many children (and maybe chaperones) took long naps in the afternoon.
