We went on a walking trip to Stevens Park on Wednesday morning! Before we went on our trip, we previewed and compiled a list of possible sightings.
Here are some of the things we thought we might see at the park:
At the park, we gathered two green bags of nature treasures to bring back to the
Rivers classroom.
We have been looking for squirrels every day, and we have discovered many of them in Church Square Park. One of the books that Ms. Buckley read on Wednesday after our walking trip to Stevens Park was this one:
Today in the drama area, we spied our two green bags of nature treasures on a green cloth that looked like the leaves of a tree.
During drama, we used the nature treasures that we had collected in these bags (twigs, sticks, bark, leaves, seedpods) to build squirrel nests.
Ms. Sytsma let us borrow her two small stuffed squirrels, and they loved the cozy nests that we built for them.
We used many twigs and sticks, pieces of bark, and leaves to construct the squirrel nests.
We wondered how real squirrels could build strong nests so high up in the trees.
We took some of the seeds out of the pods to feed to the squirrels.
We took turns holding the squirrels as we worked to build their nests.
We even sang "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" to the squirrels as they fell asleep in the nests that we had created for them.
Today we also reflected on what we had seen on our walking trip to Stevens Park. We looked at our list and put a red X by things that we did not see, and a
green check by things that we did see.
We had seen many things on our walking trip!
(No dinosaurs or rocket ships, however. Maybe next time!)
We had many lovely encounters with nature, especially trees, on our walking trip.
