Singing Together

Singing is a vital part of our community at The Nest. We make time throughout the morning to sing together, learning new songs, nursery rhymes, and chants.

Every Friday, after park, we have music class with Mrs. Mauldin. Mrs. Mauldin is the music teacher for children from The Nest up through 5th grade at Mustard Seed School. We learned that she likes singing so much that she even sings "Hello" and "Goodbye." 

We are learning words, music and actions, and we are increasing our repertoire of songs and rhymes every day. Lots of the songs we sing have actions or signs. These support memory and help the children learn the words. Actions help children participate when they feel shy about singing. 

Our songs are a fun way to learn many things. At the moment, many of our songs focus on our thumb and first two fingers. Whether that's in "Two Little Blackbirds" or "Where Is Thumbkin?" Isolating and naming these fingers is fine motor practice and preparation for writing. 

We learned a naming song where each child speaks his or her name to the class and hears his or her name sung back. This offers everyone the opportunity to be heard in the group and to practice listening to others. Knowing the names of classmates is a good start to making new friends. We sing to praise God and know Him better.
