Observing Marine Animals

The Rivers Class students have been observing marine animals in books and by using models.  They have worked to make sketches of the animals to show the features that they notice or wonder about.  

They are noticing many wonderful and surprising features on these animals and are beginning to classify the animals based on their observations.  There are the animals who have holes on their heads that "splash water."  There are the ones with big teeth and fins-- sharks but others too, we are finding.  There are animals that live in shells.  As we learn more facts, these classifications will get closer to the classifications that scientists use (mammals, fish, crustaceans, etc.).  

But for now, the children are forced to look very closely at the animals to decide if they can see any patterns.  

We are beginning our search for experts on marine animals, scuba diving, oceans, fishing, and anything that might fall under the umbrella of marine life.  Please let Ms Sytsma know if you have any resources or are an expert willing to be interviewed by the Rivers Class.
