Is Hoboken a City?

The Rivers Class is not sure if Hoboken is a city. They know about New York City, but could our school neighborhood also be a city? 

First, how do we define a city? 

Here are some answers from the children:

"A city is where people live" 

"A walking place"

"Pigeons flying"

"Where people work"

"Big tall buildings"

We took a vote. 

Each child had a red sticker and could decide: 

YES, Hoboken is a city.

NO, Hoboken is not a city.

It was a tie! 6 votes for each answer.

So a teacher suggested asking family members to cast a vote. 

Mr. Postema cast a vote when he stopped by.

The adults agreed unanimously that Hoboken is a city. 
We'll keep pondering this question as we further investigate our neighborhood.
