Giving Thanks

Every day before snack, we stop to thank God. We always say thank you for the snack provided by a student that day. Then I ask the children what else they would like to thank God for.

Since we have just returned from the park, the outdoors often features: for rain to help plants grow, no rain so we could play on the slide, the leaves changing color, good sticks for digging, etc. Families are also a favorite thank you: brothers and sisters (we introduced the word sibling), moms and dads, grandparents. During our creation study, each day would bring a new element of creation in our thanksgiving.

The students have been working on a gift to bring home on Thursday. One of the collaborative paintings the children made was cut and used to decorate a candle that might be used at your family meal times or at your Thanksgiving table.

The children named people and things for which they would like to thank God. The list grew into something quite lovely. Everything from moms and dads to roosters and bananas. From paint to eating pasta. Thankfulness feels good.

We encourage you to take a few minutes in the next weeks to say out loud some of the things for which you are thankful. We left space on the gift for you to add your own thanks. It is good for the children to hear those who surround them expressing thanks and the hope and calm that accompany that act.

It is a good time for us to say, as well, that we are thankful for all of you and for time spent learning with your children.
