The Discovery Table is a place for exploration and observation, a space where students enjoy working with a friend or discovering by themselves.
So far this year, the Discovery Table has featured rocks and minerals of various types and sizes and currently many intriguing and beautiful treasures from nature: leaves in many colors, sticks of various sizes and shapes, sticky burrs, acorns, pieces of bark, small seeds.
We added two types of magnifying glasses to the Discovery Table so children could observe the details of these nature treasures.
At paint, children have explored color and the sensory experience of using a paintbrush and most are moving into a time of learning to express ideas and understanding through representational forms. This week many children are taking on the challenge of painting an apple and a pumpkin, showing the colors and the shape.
When children are three years-old, they naturally develop beyond a pattern of circular scribbling in their drawing and begin to be able to form stronger and stronger circles. At first the circles are wobbly, then they become more symmetrical and round. Drawing or painting apples, pumpkins, and soon snowmen, is the perfect practice for circles.
