The entire Nest preschool is embarking on an exciting study of medieval times, and the Rivers Class has been thinking about castles. Students have shared what they know about castles. We have read books together. Students have drawn pictures of castles.
On Wednesday we took a walking trip to look at a "castle church" that we can see from our classroom window: Holy Innocents Church on the corner of 6th and Willow.
Students noticed the brickwork, the arched doorways, the gate, the decorative and metal roof, the statues, the stained glass windows, and the crenellations (battlements) on the roof.
In blocks, students have been building castles with architectural features such as drawbridges, moats, watch towers, crenellations, sturdy walls, gates, windows.
Students use a research book that we have made with collected photos of castles around the world and refer to the photos as they build.
We have also read both fiction and non-fiction books about castles, dragons, knights, princes and princesses.
We are all excited about what the Rivers Class students will discover during their study, and students and teachers can't wait to see what the students in the Trees and Sky classes will share with us!
