Mailboxes Are Open

Today we opened the mailboxes for Valentine’s Day. Each child has a pocket mailbox with their photo and name displayed. As they arrived, parents helped their child deliver their valentines.

All the children were eager to make cards for each other during activity time. We encourage the children to try to write at least one letter of their name so the recipient would know who the card was from. 

Thank you to Trixie's mom for volunteering to help with this activity. She was lucky enough to receive a handmade valentine herself!

As they make drawings and messages for each other, some children will grow interested in writing the names of other children and will learn to write new letters.
Mailboxes will stay open for the rest of the year. Making and sending messages to each other will be available before school and during activity time. You are welcome to make and mail a message for your child when you drop them off in the morning. 

Not every child will receive a message every day. We manage this in several ways. First, it's ok to feel disappointed when your mailbox is empty. Next, we'll encourage the disappointed child to make a message for a friend. Then we'll suggest the children reply to their classmates. Occasionally I'll ask the children who love message-making to check the mailboxes and make sure everyone has a message. Sometimes Ms Postema and I will make messages and draw pictures for a child. We are a community and making messages is a way we show care for each other. For example, today a child made a message for another who was out sick.
