Dear Parents,
As we prepare to begin school, we thought it would be good to clarify dates and events for The Nest in September. These events are intended to help your child enter school more confidently. It is our experience that families who attend all the events help their child make a smooth transition. Please check the information below for the event, the class, and your child’s name. We look forward to seeing you soon.
You may be considering how to prepare your child for The Nest. Each child differs; some need more information and some need less. Here are a few suggestions:
- State facts simply: "When the summer is over, you will go to preschool."
- Avoid unrealistic expectations, such as: "You will love it.” Instead, let them know some of the things that will happen at school: time to draw, reading stories together, singing, playing with toys, going to the park, learning to use scissors and paint and clay
- Be positive: "I am very excited about all you will learn and do."
- Be open to opportunities for your child to bring up questions or concerns.
- Set up any new family morning routines before the first day of school.
- Describe briefly what the first day will be like. Let your child know that you will stay for the worship time and then you will say good-bye and then come back to pick him or her up.
The first days in the Nest will begin by gathering and worshipping together. After a visit to the bathroom, we will go outside to play in the park. Upon our return from the park, a simple snack will be provided. We will introduce some materials, sing a song or two, share a story and be ready to leave. This is our plan, but of course we will follow the children's lead.

Events for all Nest families
Welcome Back Parents Meeting: Tuesday, September 5, 6:30-7:15pm
- The Welcome Back Meeting in the Nest begins at 6:30pm in the classrooms. All preschool parents should attend to learn about the class activities and parent expectations. Much information will be shared and this is a great time to have questions answered. This is a parents-only event.
Park Play Date: Wednesday, September 6, 9:00-9:45am
- Between 9:00am and 9:45am, the preschool teachers will be at the central Church Square Park playground to meet new students. This is a time for families and teachers to meet one another and play at the park. You may come and go as you please during this time. Please be certain to meet all of your child’s teachers.
Classroom Visits: Saturday, September 9 (times listed below)
- This is a parent and student morning. There are set times for families to come into the classroom at half hour intervals. Parents and students may enjoy some activities together designed to help the children become familiar with the space. Please consult the list below for your visiting times for this day.

Monday, September 11, First morning of school for all Rivers students is a half-session (1.5 hours with half of the children in each session)
Please arrive at school 15 minutes before the start time which is listed below

- Later Group: 10:20-11:40
Wednesday, September 13, 8:30am-11:45am: First full morning of school for all Rivers
