This week the Rivers Class students began work with blocks!
They met two blocks and learned their names: Unit Block and Square Block. Students learned where the blocks are stored and how to safely carry them: one in each hand, only two at a time.
First they worked to fill a small board with Unit Blocks, lining up the blocks so that there were no gaps.
On Friday, they built towers using only Square Blocks. Students built their towers very carefully.
They counted the number of blocks that they had used to build their tower.
They did the "finger test" to determine whether their tower was strong.
If the tower was not strong, they made some adjustments or design changes, which is all part of experiential learning.
The challenge was to build towers that were safe, strong, and beautiful.
Later in the morning, a group of students collaborated to build a zoo, and they added animals to their story. Blocks spark creativity and students' imaginations are fully engaged!
When students finish working with blocks, they carefully unbuild their structures and carry the blocks (only two at a time) back to the blocks shelf and neatly stack the blocks in their designated spots, ready and waiting for another day of exploration.
Rivers Class students wonder what new blocks they will meet next week! They have noticed other blocks that they are very eager to use.
