The children of the Rocks and Rivers classes had worked for two days to depict the third day of Creation, first adding the water and then adding color-filled land. There was much consideration and much enthusiasm when the children were invited to reflect on their work.
Each day in worship we are hearing the story of Creation. We listen to the beautiful, receptive words and see samples of all that God made and examples of the amazing variety of God's creative expression.
We sometimes check out more examples in the classroom or in the park.
Later in activity time, the children learn art skills that address fine motor skills. But these art languages also offer the children an opportunity to express the story in a new way. As they snip small papers into rocks or learn to wash a brush in order to add a different color, children consider the reality of how things are created. And they are being creative themselves.
And the children often work together, with each child adding a new part. Together, all of the work becomes a beautiful expression, not just of the story but also of our delight in collaborating and being together. The impact of what we can do as a team or community is greater than the impact of what one of us could do in a short time at school.
This is something to celebrate.
