Rivers Class students are gardeners and this week they planted a garden in the classroom!
First, Ms. Buckley showed the students the package containing the seeds (pea shoots or micro-greens) that will grow under special lights.
Then Ms. Buckley walked around so that everyone could see and notice the size and shape of these small seeds.
Each student planted a handful of seeds in the two planters.
Ms. Buckley asked, "How should we take care of the seeds that we planted?"
"Don't bang them."
"Water it. Don't walk on it."
"They need water. They need sun. And you can't step on them."
"Do not touch them."
"Keep the soil in."
One student commented, "If they don't get enough water, they will die."
Ms. Buckley wondered, "How are these seeds going to get rain inside, when they are in the planter in our classroom?" A student responded, "We need to water them with a watering can."
As the students thought about their garden, one student shared this thought: "Some flowers (plants) we eat. Some flowers (plants) we don't eat." Ms. Buckley told the students that they would be able to eat the plants (micro-greens) which will grow in the Rivers Class garden.
